Over the last few weeks we have been looking at the sugar addiction issue, what it takes to break it and ultimately how the decision to stay sugar free revolves around 3 options. The options being the following:
1. Never go back to putting into your mouth anything processed, ever! This gives a person the best possible chance of being healthy over the long term.
2. Live dangerously, experimenting with processed foods, this option invariably leads to a new sugar addiction and leads a person back to their old habits.
3. Don’t worry about the lifestyle change, just enjoy life and eat what you want. Nothing changes, health is compromised, weight usually keeps going up and this option along with a failure in option two gives the person the best possible chance of contracting a chronic disease like type 2 diabetes.The question is how on earth does someone keep choosing option 1. After all we all know that option 1 is the option that makes sense, especially when it comes to our health. Presumably by the time that option 1 is being considered a lifestyle change has already occurred and a new way of eating is in full swing. So what could possibly happen that a person is discouraged to the point where they revert back to eating processed foods? There is no doubt that the addiction side of things is well and truly over so a physical addiction can longer be a factor. There is no doubt based on our current research project “Falling off the wagon” one of the main factors is peer pressure of some type. Lets just have a look at this. There is a person who has gone away from all processed foods. Weight has dropped dramatically, Blood pressure normalises, chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes reverse, they have more energy than ever and peer pressure changes this situation? How can this be?There is a simple answer. If the person feels that they are weird or social misfits then the peer pressure will be to much and many people at this point will cave in. So the question is, what does it take? What does it take to get past this and to maintain a healthy sugar-free lifestyle.
Imagine for one moment that you no longer feel like you are weird or that you are some sort of socially disabled person because of your diet. Imagine if because of the benefits that you have experienced you see everyone else as people needing help. What if you were proud to go to a restaurant and say I eat food that is not processed? What if you could go to your friends place and say to them I am sorry but I don’t eat processed foods and am very happy just to have a salad or whatever other unprocessed food is available. We find this type of decision making very powerful. There is almost not one meal that people ask us, why do you eat this way? And that question we will look at next week. There is no doubt that when this question is asked if you are able to articulate the answer the right way you will be in a position where you can actually help someone else. That can be extremely rewarding.
For now it is very important to understand that ultimately it is how we see our position and the attitude we have towards what we are doing. If you know that you have experienced huge health benefits than why would you ever feel like a person that is weird? Look at it this way, wouldn’t you find someone that is overweight, prone to all sorts of lifestyle diseases eating processed foods weird? Logic plays a big part in grounding a person in what they are doing and removing the foods from ones diet that are known to cause most chronic diseases makes 100% logical sense. Doing anything else is totally illogical.
