A study published on the 15th of March 2010 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism shows that a single nights sleep deprivation induces insulin resistance in healthy people.
A total of 9 people five men and 4 women were studied. It was shown that when sleep was restricted to 4 hours basal levels of glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, insulin, or endogenous glucose production were not affected.
It was shown however that the sleep restriction did decrease hepatic insulin resistance.
This finding confirms that a good quality sleep every night may be of importance for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics.
