Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 25/8/2014

Greetings,

Last week we looked at what a balanced diet is. This week we look at how to ensure that enough nutrients are consumed. It seems that when someone is consuming a typical western diet which is high in sugar and low in nutrition this is a question that is very rarely asked. If however a person starts to consume a whole foods plant based diet which is low in sugars and high in nutrition this is a question that is immediately asked. Question like where are yo getting your iron from, or what about calcium come up almost immediately.

From last weeks newsletter we learnt that different colours of vegetable provide us with different nutrients or at least different levels of nutrients. The question is how can someone ensure that the appropriate volumes of nutrition are being consumed.

There are three ways of consuming nutrition.

  1. The first is the traditional way. Eating. When eating it is best to ensure that the the food where possible is not cooked. Lightly steamed at most will ensure that all of the nutrients are in tact. Each meal should contains plenty of good quality whole foods. Remember the rainbow approach? This applies to this type of food.
  2. The second way is a smoothie.  Often there is much confusion between a smoothie and a juice. Lets remove the confusion. Smoothies are fantastic. They can be very tasty and absolutely jam packed with whole foods. The advantage of a smoothie is that all the produce used is raw. From a volume point of view you will still consume around that same amount of produce as if you were eating.
  3. The third is juicing. This way of consuming nutrients is very different.  A juicer strips away the pulp or fibre, the results is that to make a juice which would be large enough to satisfy as a meal replacement a huge amount of produce needs to be used. As a matter of fact, it is so much that it is not possible to eat this quantity but it is quite easy to drink it. In this way it is possible to consume large amounts of nutrition.

It is always a great idea that even while eating whole foods to have a good juice. It is a great way to start you day, have lunch or even a dinner. Knowing that you are consuming a massive vitamin/mineral pill will give you confidence that you are boosting your nutritional intake and if you are juicing all the colours you will be getting the full spectrum of all the required nutrients.
