Lifestyle Designed To Help Normalise Blood Sugar Levels
8/6/2017
Prior to my diagnosis of having Diabetes 2 and having high cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, I was overweight and had slowly gained 20kg over the past 30 years or so. My weight had fluctuated between 75kg and 99kg (didn’t quite reach 100kg).
At one stage I was visiting a dietitian who successfully helped me reduce my weight by approximately 15%, just to start gaining it again after I had achieved my goal of 80kg. A short time later I had regained that weight and was given a bonus amount on top of that.
Although I have read many articles relating to:
Being overweight,
Being obese,
Having diabetes,
Sugar is poison ,
Exercise more and eat less, etc.
Basically, I was endeavouring to establish the right way to, or even if it was possible eliminate my diabetes and high cholesterol problem. I had been unsuccessful in creating a positive change to my mind set, relating to a total lifestyle change.
More recently my Dr. had explained about Diabetes and to his credit had arranged for me to have a series of appointments with the diabetic health educator. They went deeper into the reasons behind why a person may become a diabetic. To their credit they had all the information. I walked away from there with more knowledge, however my motivation level hadn’t really changed, still having the attitude, “she’ll be right, I’ll get to it”. To this point I had irregular levels of motivation and ended up being overweight again.
Earlier this year my wife approached me with an article that she had read in the Gympie Times relating to “Diabetic Health Clinic Lifestyle Program”. The organiser was offering a 12 week community based program for Gympie residents to lose some weight and potentially reverse their Diabetes. Additionally this program was offered free of any costs. My wife convinced me that we should go and see what it is like. Thank you Mrs Powell.
As the first night progressed I became more and more impressed with the organised, informative presentation. The information was certainly backed up with all data and facts at hand. The presenter for this program was in fact the founder of the Diabetic Health Clinic, Mr. Peter Pratt. The two hours flew by. I found the information presented was generating an interest for me to learn, and I also noticed that my motivation was increasing. At this early stage of the program, I was very interested in the Daibetic Health Clinic website, www.diabetichealthclinic.org. The sessions were being digitally recorded and placed on the net to allow access during the week, references, notes to be looked at during the week, online videos and much much more was accessible on the DHC site. The presenter was always encouraging us to consult with our Dr. prior to making any changes with our lifestyle. The program was a conduit for the information to pass to us and in consultation with our Dr. make to correct and informative changes.
The contents of each session seemed to continue to create interest. Not was it directed to eat less and exercise more, but included the anatomy, medication, scientific discoveries, sugar, nutrients, mono nutrients, micro nutrients etc. During the first 6 weeks of the program absolutely flew by. Everyone was very excited and were wanting to start the next phase. That being juicing for 30 days. Sounds a lot however it wasn’t long at all. The first two weeks of the juicing was to detox the body and reboot the system. The following two weeks was designed to repair the body, then the next two weeks was to learn how to eat again. This time the correct way, the same as our grandparents ate, no processed food. The 12 week program absolutely flew by and at the end I had formed new friendships in our support network, whilst encouraging each other to succeed.
This program was the right key for me to start my motivation and encourage my new lifestyle change that lead me to a successful result by improving my health. Without going on and on breaking the program down piece by piece, I will let my results speak for themselves:
Pre – Program – Medicated | Post – Program – No Medication | |
HbA1c Levels | 6.4 | 5.9 |
Fasting Blood Glucose | 6.3 | 4.6 |
Triglyceride Level | 1.4 | 1.2 |
Overall Cholesterol | 4.4 | 4 |
Blood Pressure | 140/80 | 105/75 |
Waist measurement | 119cm | 102cm |
Neck measurement | 41.5cm | 37cm |
Weight | 97.5kg | 77.5kg |
BMI | 36 | 28 |
That is the blood test results, not to mention, my snoring has stopped, I am more energetic and comfortable with my new lifestyle.
One of the important pieces of information that I have taken away from this program is:
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
Nowadays I personally don’t trust the label information on food packaging and that sugar is added to most processed food and creates the desire to consume more. I now eat nutritious food which fills me up and not consuming fillers and additives not to mention the sugar again, which causes confusion with my needs and wants in relation to food. As mentioned on the program, “food can slowly kill us or it can quickly cure us”. I now have a lifestyle which allows me to maintain a normalised blood sugar level.
I thoroughly recommend this program to any person who is serious about their health and well-being. Talk to someone from the local support group, check the www.diabetichealthclinic.org website and join the revolution to maintain good health.
On closing this Lifestyle Program, the Diabetic Health Clinic revealed that a Gympie Diabetic Health Clinic Support Group was being formed after the completion of the 2017 DHC Lifestyle Change Program. I am proud to be associated with this group and supporting the excellent work the DHC has done and will do in the future.
IF YOU ARE OVERWEIGHT OR DIABETIC, PLEASE – I ENCOURAGE YOU TO JOIN A PROGRAM.
