A study, “The Australian Paradox” which was written by Professor Jennie Brand-Miller and Dr Alan Barklay in 2011, shows that sugar use in the form of sugary drinks in Australia has been declining whilst obesity has increased. This study has been used extensively as evidence by the soft drink industry that sugar consumption and obesity has no correlation.
It now appears that there have been serious errors made. There apparently have been some words omitted which totally change the meaning of the outcomes in the study.
Two nutritionists have made the corrections as the charts in the paper does not support the claim that in the last 20 years sugary drink consumption in Australia has fallen by 10%.

This is a very interesting situation as it now leaves the soft drink industry without any supportive data that their products are safe.
It is high time that the food industry accepted the huge number of studies showing that their products not only lead to obesity and diabetes but also increase the chance of many cancers including a doubling in risk of pancreatic cancer.
