4/02/2014 – FDA wants food labels changed

For the first time in 20 years, the FDA based in the US has asked for food labels to be changed.

For most people including diabetics labeling in most countries is extremely confusing. The community has been advised for many years that fat is bad. Low-fat foods line our supermarket shelves and yet obesity keeps rising, diabetes is out of control, people are confused and disappointed.

The move to eliminate fat from the calories in food is a big one.  It acknowledges that it is not the fat that makes people fat. It is the calories from sugar and simple carbs which is a huge component of all processed food that makes people fat.

The question is at what point will the authorities actually put on the label that it is the processed ingredients that are the cause of health issues?

Complex carbs are very healthy and needed. Complex carbs come in the form of non-processed, whole food.  These carbs are safe for diabetics because they do not provide a sugar hit.

If the FDA ever did decide to do this it would be taking on the food industry in a big way so this type of move is unlikely. Having a change to the labels is a good first step and hopefully, in the future, the FDA and other authorities will spell out on our packaged foods just how dangerous they are, just like tobacco companies label tobacco products.
