Coca-Cola Amatil have funded a study which shows that sugar consumption stemming from the consumption of soft drinks in Australia has fallen.
The consumption of sugary drinks is now accepted as one of the major contributing factors to the obesity epidemic which is linked to the diabetes epidemic. Both epidemics are now a world wide issue.
Omitted from the study are the following beverages: Fancy Coke, Fancy Ice Whirl, fruit juices, alcopops and flavoured milks.
These beverages now have a significant market share and recently Coca-Cola Amatil investors were told that a “new beverage occasion” has been created. 6000 vending machines have been rolled out across Australia with a massive 44% growth in the sales of these sugary beverages.
Dr Levi who was partly responsible for the study is unavailable for comment as she is now employed by Kellogg’s.
There is no doubt that the Coca-Cola is trying everything in their power to protect and grow their business. Meanwhile the obesity and diabetes epidemic is spiralling out of control.
