Apples new smart watch, set to be released in April 2015 will be able to track and display blood glucose levels. The watch will communicate with the iPhone and with the use of additional hardware a diabetic will be able to see graphically represented sugar levels on the Apple Watch.
The new app is designed by medical device manufacturer DexCom and has been designed so that a diabetic can quickly see their blood sugar levels.
DexCom has made a body sensor which is worn around the abdomen. The sensor will measure glucose levels at intervals of 5 minutes and will be able to transmit the data to a hand held device up to 20 feet away. The hand held device then communicates with the iPhone, the blood glucose data is then displayed on the Apple smart watch. The advantage is that a user can see the data on their watch without the need to check the phone or DexCom’s remote handheld device.
The app is expected to be available in April. There will be two apps. One app will be used for viewing the data and there will also be another app that will allow the user to share their data with other people like thier doctor.
