The 26th of April, 2013, 106five Rhema FM took to the park at Cotton Tree on the Sunshine Coast for the breakfast program. The program focused on health.
The question is why would you do a live broadcast from a park at 6am in the morning?
“Today we have a situation in our society that has never before existed. We have a lack of movement like never before and our foods today are predominantly processed. We have come to accept that supermarket food is healthy and yet this could not be further from the truth.
Eating these types of factory made processed foods has now become a way of life making this our new modern day lifestyle.
These foods are sugar, salt and chemical rich. Being creatures of convenience means that we don’t think twice about consuming these foods.
This is why we have lifestyle diseases.
Diseases like type 2 diabetes are out of control and this is predominately to do with our food intake.
“We are simply passionate about making people in the community aware of the issues and the choices” said Peter Pratt from the Diabetic Health Clinic.
It is extremely difficult to change when the foods we consume are made to taste fantastic, are addictive because of their sugar and salt content, and also have great tasting artificial flavours added in.
There are also dangerous substances like MSG thrown in. MSG is a flavour enhancer that is known to also cause obesity. It appears in our foods under 50 different names and is hard to pick. Then there is aspartame. You would be surprised where you find this chemical. It is an artificial sweetener and amongst many of the negative effects it also inhibits the brain from telling you that you have had enough to eat.
It is probably not what you want when you are trying to watch your weight. This is very unfair to people who choose diet drinks because they have weight issues.
“There are so many complex food issues in our modern world that it is not possible to choose 100% healthy foods in our supermarkets unless of course you start and finish your shopping in the fruit and veg section. When you decide to consume whole, as grown foods and you don’t put any processed foods or foods that contain processed ingredients in your mouth you are doing something wonderful for you health.” said Joanne Pratt from the Diabetic Health Clinic.
Juicing is a great way to consume natural foods in a raw state and in high volumes. It supercharges the effects of a healthy diet.
Peter Pratt has reversed his diabetes and in doing so has become very passionate about sharing his story and journey with the community.
“There are now so many studies that show that type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease. With a change of lifestyle to a whole foods, as grown diet, type 2 diabetes just simply goes away. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I love sharing it with others. There is nothing more wonderful than helping a type 2 diabetic become healthy through running a program that facilitates a lifestyle change, especially when they have been told that they have the disease for life. Joe Cross who made the movie “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead” has been my inspiration. Because of Joe I am diabetes free and I feel it is my responsibility to pass on to others what I have experienced and learnt.” said Peter Pratt.
Joanne Pratt, Peter’s wife gives him 100% support in helping diabetics. Breakfast was all about juicing. Fenwicks from Buderim who pride themselves in supplying first grade produce donated the vegetables for juicing. Many people from the public were treated to a breakfast packed with raw nutrition. What a way to start a day!
“I love to see the surprise on peoples faces when they take a sip of juice and they realise that it is tasty and yum. For some reason people often think that vegetables are not very nice. My passion is making whole, as grown, unprocessed foods taste great. It is wonderful to have a meal knowing full well that there is no hidden sugar hit and that the meal will actually give you energy from the healthiest source.” said Joanne Pratt.
