The JAMA (Journal Of American Medical Association) Internal Medicine has published on the 3/6/13 a report confirming many other previous studies that people that ate a vegetarian diet lived longer than non vegetarians.
This was a finding that came from analysing 70,000 Seventh Day Adventists.
The exact reasons as to why vegetarians have a reduced risk of chronic diseases has not been established. It has however been found that diets free of meat help reduce the risk of of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome.
The study found that there is a massive 12% lower rate of mortality associated the consumption of a vegetarian diet as compared to non-vegetarians.
It was also found in the study that vegetarians who ate fish, diary or eggs, or a combination of these foods still showed a lower mortality rate than meat eaters.
It was found that men seem to benefit most from adopting a vegetarian diet, which can reduce their risk of early death from cardiovascular disease and ischemic heart disease.
The researchers concluded that “These results demonstrate an overall association of vegetarian dietary patterns with lower mortality compared with a non-vegetarian pattern.
