Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 6/7/2015

Greetings,

Eatser_EggsIt is hard to believe that Easter 2015 is behind us. We are now well into the year, how time flies! Easter is a very interesting time of the year. In many ways it is actually busier than the Christmas period. People go away for a short holiday and the traffic on the roads can be horrific. When we sit back and observe all of the festivals and special times that we have, most of them have a lot to do with eating and Easter is definitely no exception. What we do want to do today is to focus in on one Easter treat that is pushed by the commercial world in a huge way and that is the chocolate Easter egg.

We have no doubt that many people have heard that dark chocolate is actually good for you. In one way that can be the case, although if your take raw cacao and use it in its unprocessed form the benefits are much greater that chomping into a block of dark chocolate. It is also true to say that a dark chocolate Easter egg is rare. What we are talking about is milk chocolate. Lets for a moment make a assessment of what health risks milk chocolate presents.

One milk chocolate bar has 26 grams of carbohydrates, most of which is from sugars or refined carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates can cause spikes in your blood sugar, which can make your body resistant to insulin over time and may lead to type 2 diabetes. The excess sugar may also send you to the dentist more often than you’d like with tooth decay and cavities.

Gastroesophageal reflux is a condition in which the stomach contents come back up into your esophagus, resulting in heartburn. Chocolate causes your lower esophageal sphincter to relax, which enables the stomach contents to travel back upward, giving you that burning sensation behind your chest.

Chocolate may contribute to lower bone density.

Chocolate can trigger headaches in migraine sufferers.

Milk chocolate is high in calories, saturated fat and sugar.

As you can see there is no doubt that there are better options than milk chocolate. Yet again we have a delicacy that is sold and eaten widely which is actually not beneficial for our health in any way. We think that this is something important to remember for next Easter and as far as the Easter eggs are concerned they should be going once and twice and then gone! Why not replace them with a wide variety on real chocolate foods made from raw cacao? Then you will have the best of both worlds, unbelievable treats and the great health benefits that come along with these treats. To check out some great recipes click on this link.

Just in case you are wondering, the faithful Easter bunny has the same issues.
