A new report confirms a shocking fact. The Australian state of Queensland is heading for a diabetes catastrophe.
“The 2014 Queensland Chief Health Officer’s report predicts a 500% increase in diabetes-related spending by 2033 which would have a dire impact on Queensland’s health system and the state’s economy as a whole,” said Ms Trute from Diabetes Queensland.
Most governments around the world today a grappling with the prospect of a diabetes related onslaught onto their budgets. At this stage there are no answers as to how this epidemic will be curbed and how the health care bill will be paid.
Some forecasts and facts in the new report are:
- In Queensland by the year 2033 the cost of the diabetes epidemic on the health care system will be 8.6 billion dollars.
- According to the report 54% of people with diabetes are not adequately treated.
- Without adequate treatment amputations, blindness and other complications sky rocket. This puts an unacceptable strain on the healthcare system and impacts on peoples quality of life.
- 60% of diabetes cases can be delayed or prevented by utilising the current medical protocols.
- The early onset of diabetes can be addressed through appropriate programs.
Diabetes today is a problem that is no longer being called a epidemic. It has now been upgraded to a catastrophe.
