There is currently a whole range of new technologies emerging to finally rid diabetics of having to prick their fingers just to measure blood glucose levels. Noviosense a company in Nijmegen Holland has applied for a patent for a very interesting and novel device. It is a tiny device that is worn in the eye and measure blood glucose levels on a continual basis by monitoring sugar levels in tears.
The device will be worn for two week continual stretches as the soft material around the device swells and softens allowing it to be worn comfortably next to the eye. The blood glucose levels would then be transmitted wirelessly to a reciever.
As yet the device has not been approved by the regulators. When it is it will move the device one step closer to being used by patients.
For a further understanding of the device below is information from the initial announcement:
The patent with publication number EP2699690B1 is for a medical device making use of a flexible wireless sensor system based on an electrochemical cell utilizing a hollow coil electrode.
“The patent claims our proprietary technology platform that allows wireless measurement of biomarker levels utilizing an electro active redox enzyme system combined with near field communications found in many smart phones” said Dr. Christopher Wilson CEO, NovioSense BV. “This first patent award is a significant value creation step for NovioSense and is currently being utilized in our tear glucose sensor.”
