Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 11/8/2014
Greetings,
This week we are going to touch on deficiencies, nutritional deficiencies. I often wonder why it is that we worry about being deficient in certain nutrients or minerals. Some common ones are iron deficiencies or calcium deficiencies. Then there are all sorts of vitamin deficiencies like vitamin C, B12 and then many others. I have to tell you that I am not a nutritionist, however I do have a few questions in relation to what we are told about getting the right nutrients.
The first question is at what point did we figure out that getting the appropriate nutrients revolves around eating processed foods? The follow up question is how can processed foods, which are high in energy or high in processed sugars and low in nutritional value not give you nutritional deficiencies?
The third question is, shouldn’t foods that are natural and packed in nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamins and minerals be the foods that give us everything that we need?
Lets explore some facts. Firstly if you present to your doctor , and you inform him/her that you eat non-processed foods only, you are immediately looked at as someone who is different to the norm. Guess what happens?
Because you are different you will be asked to do a blood test and it will be an extensive one at that. You will be put under a microscope. The doctor wants to see what is happening with a patient who has turned their back onto the western diet. Don’t get us wrong there is nothing wrong with being under a microscope, especially when it comes to health. What we have trouble figuring out is why the dozens of patients who consume sugar loaded, and low nutrient meals often don’t get put under the same microscope.? We are not sure about you, but we ask the question, shouldn’t this type of modern day, factory made food consumption be blood tested before any other?
The reality is that because a non-processed food diet is different, it is the one that is highlighted. Next week we will be looking at how to eat to ensure that you have a nutritionally balanced diet. You will be surprised how simple it is.
