The Researches have found that in diabetic mice a single injection of FGF1 protein normalises blood sugar levels for up to two days. The discovery was made by accident. The research team has also discovered that only are the blood sugar levels lowered but the sustained administration of FGF1 reverses insulin insensitivity. It was also discovered that there were no seen side effects.
“Controlling glucose is a dominant problem in our society,” says Ronald M. Evans, director of Salk’s Gene Expression Laboratory and corresponding author of the paper. “And FGF1 offers a new method to control glucose in a powerful and unexpected way.”
This discovery could potentially lead to a new safer types of drugs. Although promising it will be interesting to see how this discovery will translate into new drugs and as with all drugs over time it will become apparent if there are any long term side effects.
There is no doubt that for people who have a lifestyle which includes unhealthy, processed foods that these types of drugs could make it easier to deal with type 2 diabetes. It also needs to be noted that drugs are being used to treat diseases which are known as lifestyle diseases. Having a lifestyle that does not include any damaging foods will allow a person to become healthy and this will have an impact on not just type 2 diabetes but all lifestyle related diseases and issues.
