Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 21/7/2014

Greetings,

This week we had a request from a someone who is attending one of our lifestyle programs to send out a list of the foods that should not be consumed.

A little while we came across an article listed the 10 worst foods for diabetics. Surprisingly the  old time favourite, chicken nuggets were listed as the number 1 worst food. The question was, what are the other 9? Sometimes it is the foods that we least suspect. The number 2 prize was taken out by white rice. Who would have thought? If you think about it, it does make perfect sense. Because white rice metabolises into sugar within a few minutes after ingestion it is the equivalent of shoveling processed sugar right into your mouth.

After some thought we asked, why on earth would you need a list anyway? When you look at any processed food why would want to know know its level of badness? The reality is that all processed foods are bad. The reason why processed foods are not good is because they spike blood sugar levels. When this happens the process of blood sugar regulation is thrown into disarray. The body has deal with the dumping of sugar and the metabolic process is put under stress. It is this constant stress that eventually leads to weight gain and for many, especially for this who have a predisposition to type 2 diabetes the disease itself.

From our perspective it is not a level of badness that needs to understood. The understanding needs to be simply whether a food is processed or not. The simple answer is, if it is processed, it should not be eaten, if it is not processed go for it, eat it. Following this rule means that the metabolic system is never put under unnecessary stress and therefore the sugar regulating mechanisms have the best possible chance of doing their job. Ultimately this is what ensures that the disease does not appear in your life, even if you do have a family history. If you already have the disease ensuring that no processed foods enter your mouth will mean that that the most likely scenario will be that the disease will cease to be an issue.

Yes a diabetic remission is possible and it has nothing to do with having a list, it does however have everything to do with keeping processed foods out of your mouth. Next week we will be expanding on this and we will be using some of our data to show you just how critical this fact is.
