Diabetic Health Clinic Newsletter – 7/7/2014

Greetings,

In our last newsletter we mentioned Subway and the fact that we are going to have a look at a subway meal. Now subway is the healthy takeaway right? Well you might just be wrong. I find this subject very important because as an ex-diabetic I used to go to Subway because I was sold the story that this stuff was actually ok for me. How wrong I was. Let’s just have a look at what a subway meal gives you.

Lets say that we get ourselves the benchmark Subway roll. A whole 1 foot long! Now that we have a clear picture of what we are getting lets start to dissect what it actually is that we are putting our mouth.

  • The roll – is made from white flour, with sugar added. Many bread products have high fructose corn syrup added although we don’t know if Subway add in this diabetic rocket fuel. They of course won’t tell. We do  know one thing.  As the roll is consumed it will metabolise into sugar within just 4 minutes. The process actually starts in your mouth, even before you swallow it. With one whole foot that is one big sugar hit, and that is just the roll.  Now lets look a bit further.
  • The meat – Subway use processed meat. Processed meats contains bits that you would not normally not eat. In a mixture you don’t even know what you are getting but that is not the issue for diabetics.  Most processed meat because it is mechanically separated will be loaded with high fructose corn syrup. Yes the diabetic rocket fuel again!
  • The vast array of sauces – A subway meal would just not taste the same without your favourite sauce. After all that is what gives the 1 foot sugar hit its flavour. Because the sauces are processed they are up to 50% sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Now that is one hefty sugar hit.
  • The salad – Ah the healthy bit, well we think! Many salads sold as takeaways are are washed in sugary water but lets assume that Subway abstain from this practice. The question is, in the context of the whole meal what does a bit of salad in the middle really mean?  The answer is not much.

Now you know you can eat fresh and have a fresh sugar fix with every bite. No wonder these subway rolls are addictive.
